All four of the Federated States of Micronesia (Chuuk, Kosrae, Pohnpei and Yap) and their 607 islands occupy the southern edge of a typhoon belt. Rains notwithstanding, Micronesia provides great opportunities for exploration, since only 65 of its islands are inhabited. In spite of the country's natural and mineral resources, neither tourism nor mining have taken off; Micronesia is largely dependent upon the United States for economic aid and defense. |
