Pros: Easy to use Cons: Bad sound, no resume, cheaply made.
Bought to replace a DVD player that would not play certain DVDs. While the price was nice, we got it for $30, it was not worth one cent. Setup was easy, but the custom setup was complicated and difficult to understand. The sound quality was terrible ...

Pros: CHEAP. This unit was cheap and replaced our broken unit without costing a lot. Cons: CHEAP, Cheap remote control, No resume play, Poor sound and picture, Unattractive display window
I purchased this product to avoid paying higher prices after my DVD player purchased in 1996 went bad. I wasn't worried about a great technological product. This product, however, doesn't even meet good standards for users that are high tech ...

Pros: Good picture, small profile, plays LOTS of media. Cons: Sounds like you have tin cans near your ears.
We have three young kids, and until they have a proper respect for the entertainment center, we don't want to invest in a high-end DVD player. We found this player for just under $50. It is compact, and black, and matches our existing equipment. The ...

Audio / Video Sync Issues
by mzill748,May 31 '07
Pros: Price Cons: Audio Video Sync Problems
I have also been experiencing the Audio / Video sync issues on every DVD I own. Movies start out in sync but the audio and video go out of sync as the movie goes along. It gets worse, the longer the movie. It is so annoying!!! I wish I would have never bought the player. Also the remote is a bit clunky in functionality. Other than that, it is ok. However, I can't stand the audio video synch issue.
I am sending back to Toshiba and of course I have to pay for shipping. Probably not even worth it, since the new unit will probably have the same issue.
There is no Firmware update out yet either because the product is so no. I would stay away.

There is a Firmware Upgrade from Toshiba
by daltonlady,Jan 27 '08
Pros: No problems Cons: None as of yet
For anyone having the sync problem with this DVD player, Toshiba has a firmware upgrade at their site. Here is the URL:
http://support.toshiba.ca/support/ceg/downloads/index.asp#
Copy and paste in browser because when I sent to my son, the # in the link did not end up included in the link in the email.
I believe the DVD player is the 6th one down in the box on above page link. I have this DVD and have no probs with sync. However, you'll read that the upgrade is for players with a serial# that begins with "M". I think it's M
Good Luck!!

Do not purchase this product.
by daveo0o,May 20 '07
Pros: N/A Cons: Overwhelming defect. Audio loses synchronization with the video.
Do not purchase this product. The audio progressively looses synchronization with the video. The longer the movie, the worse it gets. This is not a subtle thing. The delay appears to be up to 1/4 second.
Every DVD looks like it was dubbed from a foreign language by the end of the movie. This is all DVDs played, every time they are played.
I unfortunately have two of these units and they both have the same defect.
Both of the units I have are Toshiba model SD-4000KU. They were manufactured in December 2006 & Jan. 2007 and were sold through a Best Buy retail store.
I have written to Toshiba about this problem but have not yet received a response. My searches revealed several other web sites that reference this same defect with the SD-4000 DVD player. If I had read the reviews first I would never have purchased the products.

lip sync problem
by dick67,May 09 '07
Pros: none Cons: doesn't wok
I bought this dvd online and while playing a movie the lip sync goes off about half way through. Its like you are watching one of those old Japanese movies with the sound over. I sent it to Toshiba and am still waiting for a replacement. They keep telling me they have 10 days from the time they receive it to replace? Who gave them 10 days?I had considered a big screen lcd by Toshiba but no more. If they can't take care of a $50 dvd player, what would happen with a $1500 tv.

Don't Buy This Product
by rich-trum,Sep 07 '07
Pros: Compact, neat features. Cons: Out of audio-video sync about half-way through my DVD. Don't buy it!
The Toshiba SD-400 DVD Player is easy to install and has some neat features such as Fill Screen which plays wide screen DVDs in full screen mode.

Horrible Player
by araxen,Aug 07 '07
Pros: None Cons: Audio/Video sync problem
Like others have mentioned this has a horrible flaw with audio and video syncing together. Buy another dvd player like the Phillips DVD player they sell at Wal-Mart for $40. It is a much better player.

So far so good
by jgulden78,Jul 21 '08
Pros: Inexpensive; picture is sharp with component cables. Cons: Drawer made of somewhat flimsy plastic.
I bought this DVD player for $35 at a 'scratch & dent' sale because the box was banged up a bit (the player was in perfect condition) before reading the reviews here and elsewhere, but have not experienced any of the problems that others have mentioned. There is no audio/visual sync problems, audio sounds fine hooked up to the speakers I've been using with my video game systems (then again, I'm no audiophile), and pressing the stop button displays "Stop" with an image of a square with a line next to it (looks like it's indicating a pause/stop) and allows for resume play. The picture is sharp and colors are fairly rich using component cables with an older CRT tv. Overall it seems like a fairly decent player.
