Pros: Enjoyable quirky characters. Originality. Cons: Tedious cliche comic elements.
Summary: I don’t know how many goyim attended the Coen brothers latest release, A Serious Man, but there were plenty of movie-goers laughing at stuff that this goy didn’t find funny. Maybe it’s a Jewish thing ... read more

Pros: Great use of Jewish humour in all of its bleak, dark glory. Cons: Not for everyone.
Summary: I must admit that my favourite form of comedy tends to be those on the darker, bleaker side. Let's face it, when you slip on the banana skin is a tragedy, but when someone else does, it's comedy, to use an old cliche. And there's something about Jewish ... read more

Pros: Clever script, excellent period details, solid acting Cons: slow pacing, ethnic-based subtle humor may not resonate
Summary: A Serious Man explores in quirky dark-comedy Coen Brothers' style what it was like to be a modern Jew in suburban Minnesota circa 1967. Why a movie about this would interest an audience intent on packing houses to see a 3D Avatar may ... read more

Pros: period verisimilitude, DVD bonus features Cons: plots, cliched characters condescended-to by the Coens, absence of Frances McDormand
Summary: I prefer my mid-1960s change movies authentic, e.g., Michelangelo Antonioini’s “Blow-Up” (1965) and Richard Lester’s “ ... read more

Pros: Nothing at all, nothing Cons: Every every every little and last thing.
Summary: Joel and Ethan Coen have sold their souls to a haphazard soulshark. Rather than giving up their whole souls for permanent triumphs, they have bargained to make at least one very bad movie for every very good one. If you are a fan of the pair, then you ... read more

Pros: None Cons: drags, bad ending, plot unorganized, boring
Summary: I saw this movie as part of the AMC Best Picture nominated showcase. It would not have been a movie I picked out to see. It was nominated for Best Picture and Best Screenplay. I, personally, did not like this film and ... read more

Pros: thought-provoking and funny, LOST connections Cons: all that ambiguity can get pretty frustrating
Summary: Last week, my brother came home for Spring Break, and one of the first things on his agenda was seeing a couple more of the Oscar nominees before the Academy Awards. The last one we squeezed in was the Coen Brothers’ A Serious Man. I ... read more

Pros: Great script, very funny, brillant blending of genres and styles Cons: The ending will annoy a lot of people
Summary: The Coen Brothers are some of the best filmmakers still working today. Since 1984 with Blood Simple, they have been consistently making films and winning awards, and while not all their films are great (looking at you Burn after Reading), they have a ... read more
