Samsung DVD-HD870 DVD Player

Pros: Plays everything and has all newest features. Divx, mpeg4, and HD ready.
Cons: None discovered so far.

Pros: Divx, optical, nice remote.
Cons: only 1080i, open button stopped working.

with 1080p being all the hype i felt i needed to upgrade from this player to an upcovert 1080p player. this samsung unit though not 1080p was IMO a much more user friendly and all around better player.

played anything i threw at it flawlessly, options and user settings were easy to use and find.

not to mention DIVX! and Optical outputs.

only problem was that the open/close button stopped working after 6 months.

Pros: Good picture
Cons: Getting poor sound using HDMI cable

Bought this unit along with a new 61" Samsung TV. Picture quality is pretty good. However, I am having problems with the sound quality when using the HDMI cable. The sound will momentarily skip out every minute or two. Samsung tech support said it needed a firmware update and they sent me a disk. I did the firmware update, but it didn't help. By the time I got the disk for the firmware update, I was beyond the 30 days where I could return it to the store so then I had to send it back to Samsung for service. I just recieved it back after two weeks and it is still doing the same thing. Very frustrated now. Audio doesn't skip when I connect the DVD player using the composite cables, but the picture quality isn't as good as using the HDMI. So I have to choose between poor picture and ok sound, or great picture and an annoying skipping sound every minute or two. I have had the cable box hooked using the same HDMI cable and TV jack and they work fine. I wouldn't recommend this upscaling DVD player to anyone....

Pros: Cheap decent Standard dvd player with UPSCALING to higher resolution
Cons: Upscaling Standard Def is and will never be HD

Contarary to the previous reviewers comment about this player being "hD ready"...it is NOT!!
This is an upscaling player which scales a SD Standard Definition Signal from a standard DVD up to a higher definition.
Try this.....upload a picture to your pc and double its resolution for example and see what happens.
This dvd player will NEVER play a HD-DVD disc

Just replaced my current DVD player with this one because I am not ready to drop $500 on a HD-DVD/Blu-Ray player that might be obsolete in a few years. I hooked it up using the digital audio and the component video. It is a huge upgrade from my old regular DVD player. I popped in an old DVD and was very impressed with how much better it looked over the old player. The sound quality is great too. Note that this unit is not a HD-DVD player but an upconverting DVD player. One of the nice things about this model is the ability to make manual adjustments to the picture's brightness, black level, contrast and color saturation levels. At CND$89 you can't beat it for features and picture quality.

Pros: High quality, sleek design
Cons: not as clear in HDMI or Component as my 6 year old DVD player.

I bought this DVD for my Sharp aquos 720p LCD, to tune up my standard def DVD's. I am hooked up using monster HDMI, and I find the picture muddy and background blurry. Not impressed. Hooked up my old DVD player and called it a night.

Pros: Price, installation, design
Cons: Remote control

I'm very happy with it but the remote control is very bad you have to stand right in front of it to make it work. Very easy to install and great quality
