I do my best to stay healthy. It helps to have great exercise DVDs and friends who nudge (such as my walking buddy at work). I also like reading Fitness Magazine. It includes much more than exercise routines.
The Basics
Fitness Magazine is a blend of things that create a healthy lifestyle. The magazine incorporates exercise routines, stress reducing techniques, recipes, fashion reviews and exercise gear. This is definitely a magazine for women, focusing on their needs.
Table of Contents
The front of the magazine includes a Table of Contents that covers feature articles special to each issue as well as monthly departments. The regular topics include:
Fit Life explores lifestyle motivations (everything from quick exercises, stress reducing techniques, to how to achieve a fit body using outside help)
Beauty/Style -- makeup and skin treatment tips, how to pamper yourself and look your best
Fitness -- quick exercise routines and a monthly feature called the "Run/Walk Workbook" with tips for those who enjoy running or walking
Nutrition -- recipes and food ideas (Fitness Magazine also has a recipe swap on their website)
Health -- various health topics explored (ex: heart, PMS) as well as ways to live a more healthy lifestyle
Balance -- how to achieve balance, like who you are
Special Offers -- throughout the Table of Contents are sprinkled some special incentives such as contest listings, discounts, reference to the Fitness Magazine website where they have the recipe swap and a calorie calculator to name a few offerings
My Experiences
I enjoy reading this magazine. The feature articles are interspersed with shorter pieces, making this an easy magazine to thumb through. I can take the time to read the longer articles, or hop through the magazine touching on the shorter "instant" pieces of knowledge depending on how much time I have.
The magazine begins with an "I Did It!" three-quarter page section that highlights the successes of three Fitness Magazine readers. It is inspirational to see how people have changed their lives in healthier directions. These short bios include stats of each person, including how much weight they lost and how much time it took to do it, and what they did to achieve the end result. These brief inspirational glimpses always inspire me.
I especially enjoy the product reviews, seeing what is new out there. There are also great articles that compare products, highlighting what works, or what products are best for certain situations. These reviews vary from issue to issue and include such items as beauty products, sunscreen, and fashion, to name a few.
Of course, I can't forget to mention the exercise routines! That is one of the strongest points of this magazine. Each issue includes several routines, everything from half hour sessions to shorter 10 minute exercise breaks (it varies from issue to issue). There are plenty of step-by-step full color photographs, too. The exercises cover a lot of territory. The wide variety offers something for everyone. For instance, looking at several random issues of this magazine, I see routines that incorporate a medicine ball, weights, health steps, exercise bands, and good old-fashioned stretching. I like yoga, but even though a few of the exercises might incorporate some yoga-style moves, this is not a yoga magazine. The exercises sometimes include variations for the beginner, intermediate and advanced, which makes it easy to adjust a routine to my experience. If I like a routine enough to want to refer to it again, I will remove the pages from the magazine, three-hole punch them, and save them in a binder for reference.
Toward the back of each issue, are several pages of recipes. They include everything from fruit drinks, sandwiches, salads, soups, chicken and steak dishes to name a few. Sometimes the recipes are broken into meal areas such as breakfast, lunch, snacks, or dinner. Some of the recipes include nutritional information and serving sizes.
As you can imagine, this type of magazine is saturated with advertising. Sometimes it's hard to find the content for all the ads. The pitches include everything from beauty products and fashion to foods, travel and medications.
The Website
Many magazines these days include additional content on their website. The Fitness Magazine website offers much in the way of information about workouts, weight loss, food, health, beauty. There is also a blog, discussion board, and a collection of free exercise videos if you sign up for free membership. However, be prepared for a lot of annoying pop-up windows.
Subscribing
The inside of the magazine does not offer any subscription information, instead referring the reader to their website or a mailing address with a P.O. Box number.
This magazine is very affordable if you pull one of the subscription cards out of a magazine issue. The cards typically offer two years of this magazine for $16.97.
Order from the fitnessmagazine.com website, and they include some free guides along with the $16.97 for two year subscription rate.
