Gambit624's Full Review: Hewlett Packard Officejet 5610 All-In-One InkJet P...
When we went to buy a new laptop for my wife so she could do work for my son's therapy center at home, we needed to get her a printer for our room, since we didn't have room down in our office in the basement. After doing some research, we decided to purchase the 5610, based on what she needed, and it's price/feature ratio.
Getting this product out of the box was easy. Included with the printer was the HP software for scanning, printer drivers and fax for both Windows XP and Vista (on separate discs), as well as Mac OS. It also came with start cartridges for both color and black and white. I would suggest purchasing another black cartridge with this model. You use black much more than color. Once you have the new cartridge, you can take that (as well as the color one), to a cartridge refill place and have them refill it for a savings over just buying a whole new cartridge. You will, however, have to purchase a separate USB 2.0 cord, as it is not included.
Setting up the device was fairly straight forward. The only real issue I had with the physical set up of the printer was installing the cartridges into their holders. This was a minor hassle, however.
Installing the software was a slight chore. I was installing it on an Acer Laptop that had Vista Home Basic. It took me about 20 minutes to get everything installed completely, as I did have to restart the computer for some reason during the installation. To help speed this up, I would suggest not plugging the printer into the computer until prompted to do so by the software during installation. It will make everything easier for you.
Once you get past the installation, it becomes better. One of the first things I did was test print a 5 page document (text only), to verify the PPM claim of 20ppm. It took about 10 seconds for the printing to start, but once it started, it spit the entire document out in about 15 seconds. Color documents are slower, at about 13PPM, which is close to what I have experienced with this device in my use. If I had to say anything about the printing on this device, is that it shakes quite a bit when printing. We have it on a wooden shelf on the floor, and you can hear it move when it prints.
Scanning on this flatbed scanner is really good for the price point. And I definitely am kicking myself for not getting a flat bed all in one in 2005. It's much more versatile than the scanner I have on my systems. Scanned images come out crisp and clear. No fuzziness. You can do a preview scan, and only scan what you want, or do a entire bed scan without a preview. This determines how fast you can scan images.
Copying on this is okay. It's nothing to get excited over, but nothing that takes away from it. You can use the feeder to copy multiple documents at once, but it takes them after is it finished printing the previous document. You also do not have to have the device connected to copy anything.
I've only faxed on this device once. I faxed a document that I have on the laptop to test it's ability to fax something without printing the document. This works really well. It goes at the same speed as a regular fax, but I am happy I now don't have to waste any paper just to send a copy of something on my computer. I wish they had this when I bought my all-in-one back in 2005.
