benjikel's Full Review: LG WM2016C Front Load Washer
Have had the WM2016CW front load washing machine for a month-and-a-half. Bought it based on the great reviews for LG, thinking the front loading was the way of the future. The machine was also on sale. I really liked the idea of getting a better washing machine than my top loading one that had just died.
This one is an energy star rated product, that was a big plus.
I disliked that I felt I had to purchase the stand for an additional $200, just to have it off the floor and at a comfortable height. And I'm petite! Despite this, there is still a lot of stooping and bending doing your wash and then loading the dryer.
I do not like that you have to touch every piece of soiled laundry to place it in the small drum (as opposed to shaking the hamper into the top loading kind.)
The HE laundry detergent is very expensive.
The machine spins so violently that the clothes are a tangled mess getting out. That means clothes fall on the floor from the washer on the way to the dryer. Ah, removing laundry from the washing machine to the dryer...
Due to the twisted and tangled articles just spun and wound so tightly together it is a contest to pull a single item from the small drum.
Most items are completely connected to each other in a sort of laundry train, so it's no longer a simple task to toss the clothes into the dryer. You wrestle for an item, shake it somewhat to free some wrinkles and toss into the dryer. Repeat for each item.
Socks and small things that did not make it on the "train" fall to the floor. Bend. Stoop. Cuss.
I have not seen a shortened drying time despite this intense spinning. I might add that it spun so hard yesterday that my giant container of (expensive) Tide HE was shaken right off the top of the machine, fell to its death, cracking open the cap and gurgling all over the floor. It took me no less than 45 minutes to mop up Tide.
Any water saved in the washing machine was consumed in mopping the floor. This incident prompted me to write this review. (Note: the Tide container was made to lie on its side to dispense into washer.)
As far as the cycles:
First, the dial is very easy to use, and makes a cool chingy sound as you spin it, deciding which cycle to choose.
If you don't want to think any further, you're ready to go. Your water temp and spin speed are pre-chosen based on your initial choice of load (cotton/towels; regular.)
Despite having read the manual (I am a geek) I'm still not clear about certain settings. The product came with a nice laminated "cheat sheet" of information which I have attached to the washer.
(Note:I never choose High for the spin speed. And no longer store the Tide on the top. And especially do not leave the house during laundry cycles.)
Also, the cycles take a long time. I haven't gotten away with less than 55 minutes for one load. That's for a family of 4.
As for maintenance, there are two things you might not be aware of needing to do:
1. Cleaning the pump filter, twice a month (stoop to open the little door, and get a bucket and an old towel ready, it's been a messy task, water dripping into the drawer of the stand)
and
2. Wipe the door seal, glass and door opening area and around the inner drum/door seal and the lower door seal after each laundry cycle! You cannot simply close the door after a load. You must use a towel and dry the rubber seal and/or leave the door open (don't do this with kids around) lest you get a very stinky room.
That's a lot of work, if you ask me. Even washboards didn't require this attention!
I am not used to this much upkeep with a washer.
Lastly, there is something called Child Lock. It implies to me that you can lock the door so a child could not get in and well, let's not go there. But what it really means is that it prevents unwanted changes to the wash settings! I'm not sure kids are that interested in changing the settings, and need to be locked out of the possibility. Imagine, "Silly Mom, she should be using HOT water on those whites, here, let me adjust that for her, she's probably just tired..." No, I'd like to see Child Lock mean a child could not open the machine ever with the lock ON.
