Pros: Thrills and chills, claustrophobic setting
Cons: movie felt like it was over too quick, a little incomplete
The Bottom Line: If you had a choice between this and "The Cave" do everything you can to watch this instead of the cave.

| colinh810's Full Review: The Descent |
Intro
My friend suggested that we watching "The Descent" and when I six girls appeared on the screen I knew why my friend had suggested it. I dont think I need to explain why I had low expectations of this movie.
About the Movie
The Descent is a British horror film dealing with the subject of caves. Surprisingly another movie with the title of "The Cave" had a close release date to this one. Don't confuse that horrible movie with this one. Once I saw the trailer for "The Cave" I knew it would be a disappointment. On the other hand "The Descent" surpassed my humble anticipation.
Plot
The plot revolves around six young athletic women on a trip to the Appalachian Mountains to help Sarah cope with a tragedy that occurs a year before. They plan a cavern exploration journey, and enter some uncharted caves. After a tunnel collapse which traps the women in a maze of dark rocks, they meet something unexpected. They try to find their way out with nothing but their varying rockclimbing abilities and each other.
Acting
The cast is mainly made up of relatively unknown actors, and sometimes this is the best thing that can happen for a film. Either the actors perform up to par with some of the big names, or their performance is forgettable. Half of the cast stood out and the other half was forgettable. A notable performance came from Natalie Mendoza(Juno in the movie). She brought a subtle level of deceit and rage to her character.
Why Watch?
While the plot is not as complicated as a system of underground caverns, it's the delivery that contributes to the frightening ambiance of this movie. A lot of scenes were shot in very dim situations with the only lights being the flashlights the girls were wearing. This gives the viewer the feeling that they were trapped along with the girls. The psychological aspect of the film was also handled well. When trapped in a small enclosure different people react differently and this film showed these reactions well. It's the interactions between the six when they get trapped that makes the movie worth watching. If you can, watch the original unedited ending.
(7.6/10)
I am going to use a 1-10(low to high) scale rating on my reviews.
This is my first movie review, and I would appreciate any tips, feedback, or comments that you would have.
