Pros: Some good points made, tame, interesting presentation... Cons: Emotional manipulation, formulaic, maybe a little too tame
You couldve asked me years ago how I felt about Michael Moore and I would have been straight up brown nosing, but at this stage of my life I am a bit more standoff. While Bowling For Columbine, his examination about the gun control in our ...
Pros: A solid overview of healthcare in America and other lands Cons: Doesn't look at another problem in American healthcare
In Sicko, Michael Moore reflects on the various tales of American healthcare woes he shares in his film and sadly wonders, "Who are we?" Americans have been told they live in a land of plenty. Some would say that America is most plentiful, ...
Pros: Incredible story of our flawed medical system Cons: Might have left the Cuba part out
Michael Moore is a controversial figure to say the least. Even though I've agreed with the premise of each of his previous films, I realize that he rubs many people the wrong way. He's attacked the automotive industry, the NRA, and, of course, George ...
Pros: Aims at a very real problem. Cons: Self-indulgent and melodramatic.
Michael Moore's movie Sicko is a sarcastic indictment of the American Health Care system, which Moore says is in the hands of a few greedy executives making millions in a criminal way, not that far removed from organized crime. It's as if Tony ...
Pros: relentless, thoughtful, smart and moving Cons: not a tentpole flick, more of a whisper than a roar
Michael Moore is larger than life - and I'm not just talking about his waistline. No single figure - apart from Dubya, Hillary or Paris Hilton - conjures up such an immediate love-hate relationship. Maybe that's why Fahrenheit 9/11 did so well at the ...
Pros: Opened my eyes even wider to how we treat our sick, we need change Cons: makes me think about retirement in another country
Most people have an opinion of Michael Moore. No gray area here. You either hate him or think he's someone who makes important films that inspire action. Let me go on record by saying that the only other Moore film that I have seen was "Fahrenheit ...
Pros: Shock value - expose' of a sick health care system Cons: Weak, unbalanced, predictable
Sicko finally makes it to Belgium but Michael Moores new film has left the Flemish public yawning. Most likely because it told us what we already knew: the US is a jungle of a society where people are left to die on the street among the general ...
Pros: We need a catalyst to get this issue to the forefront in America. Cons: Going to Cuba may have been a little over the top.
It is time for Americans to demand a change in our healthcare system. No, not by saying it is important to us, not by writing it on the internet. It takes more of a revolution than that. We are all going to have to demonstrate, visibly, whatever it ...
Pros: The film's first hour is simply harrowing. Cons: When Moore ventures overseas, the movie begins to falter.
He's baaack. That incendiary ragamuffin Michael Moore returns to the big screen, and this time, he focuses his attention on the (sorry) state of the U.S. health care system. Whatever your politics, health care is an issue that affects every single ...
Pros: An informative look at an issue of growing importance. Cons: Needs to be given a chance before it can be debated.
Anyone that goes to the movie theaters to see a Michael Moore film knows what they are in for. Moore has crafted a brilliant career for himself directing and producing informative and interesting documentaries that highlight issues such as the failure of ...
Pros: Accurate, unbiased depiction of one of the most shameful and embarrassing problems in the U.S. Cons: Some people won't get it, due to prejudice about Moore's style, political stance, previous films.
I have been a big fan of Michael Moore's since his first few films. As a writer and former news broadcaster, even the sometimes silly way he presents things, never changed my level of support and belief in his work. I believe that Fahrenheit 9/11, ...
Pros: Important topic, funny Cons: People's preconcieved notions may keep them from seeing it
Finally got to see the movie I've been anticipating for quite some time. I've known Michael Moore was taking on the healthcare industry since he announced it during his Slacker Uprising Tour in 2004. I knew it was going to be riveting....I knew it was ...
Pros: A powerful, moving film showing the worst of the U.S. healthcare system. Cons: Fails to make an effective general argument.
Most of the negative reviews about Michael Moores film Sicko have rambled on at length about how biased it is, and about how his film-making is shaped by his strong left-wing orientation. I think at this point saying that Moore has a liberal bias ...
Pros: Educational, Interesting, Funny, Scary Cons: Overwrought Cuban treatment scene, Moore looks pale and sickly
Mr. Moore's methods have been called into question by many. Though Moore friends and foes alike bring up valid criticisms, no one has come within a hundred miles (160 kilometers for you folks in the Old World) of successfully arguing against any of the ...
Pros: well executed, funny, touching, informative, and heart-breaking. A very "human" film. Cons: loses a some of its momentum towards the end.
Michael Moore is good at what he does. He pieces the film together in such a way, that he creates suspense, injects a great deal of humor, and practically forces us to feel outrage. He makes it look effortless. Just prior to watching Sicko, I could ...
Pros: Comprehensive, compassionate, wake up call Cons: Did not address usual criticisms of foreign health care programs
At a time when many Americans use self-interest as a measure of whether they'll get involved in helping out "the tribe," Michale Moore stands on the hill and sounds the horn for common sense and revolution of compassionate, smart spending for US health ...
Pros: Enlightening, riveting, well researched, Important documentary Made for the USA Cons: None
Okay, Moore is a lighting rod, but this film is non-partisan and unifying. Michael Moore rises above our differences with SICKO, working to bring us together to focus on an imperative issue -- a serious flaw in the way we live and think and spend. He ...
Pros: Factual, informative, forceful Cons: Will leave you angry and upset about US health care
I thought I knew what to expect when I went to see Sicko. I've seen all of Moore's movies, so I am familiar with his penchant for melodrama. Sometimes it works, sometimes it undermines his point. For example, the tone of Roger & Me was dead on, but I ...
Sicko So you probably have heard how "documentarian" Michael Moore took a group of 9-11 survivors to Cuba for his new "documentary" (entitled Sicko) in a feeble attempt to show that socialism and communism makes for a better health care system or ...
Pros: Informative
Pro-France! Cons: I don't know that Michael Moore can pull off sincerity anymore.
Overall, I have to say this was an enjoyable documentary. It has enough accurate information and is so relevant to current American politics that most people should see it. Moreover,I appreciated the glimpses into other country's health systems. I ...
Pros: A very good documentary with great points and interesting encounters. Cons: Sometimes a bit pompous and sly.
The interesting thing about Michael Moore is that he has a great way of making a point, regardless of how many people hate his guts. The real heroes of the Michael Moore movies are really the editors who piece all of these things together. Fortunately ...
Pros: You can laugh and know you are not alone in the US health care maze. Cons: Michael Moore's lost weight! I and I have gained 15 pounds!
I have had a family member enter at his own risk into the patchwork health care system here in the US, and due to my devoting 20 hours a week to calling insurance companies, begging doctors, keeping my own records of his ailments and medication, he ...
Pros: Everything, too much to list. Cons: Long... don't watch it with someone who doesn't care about health care.
Watching Sicko will make you feel sorry for those who don't have health care and even more sorry for those that do. Michael Moore has done an excellent job at portraying the problems in our privatized health care system. This is a great movie for any American. Better yet, this is a great movie for anyone that has health insurance whether it be from the government or from a private company. It is truely a shame that health care in America is not as adequate as other second and third world countries.
Witty, right idea, but complete propaganda by muddaconch,Jul 18 '07
Pros: A+ on his high school research paper documentary, witty sarcasm. Cons: Michael Moore.
Michael Moore has a great point in that the US should have free health care, and insurance companies are more harmful than helpful, but the whole documentary is circumstantial. He ties every clip into the next to have it make complete sense; however, he makes a 3rd world country like Cuba look like it has better health care than the US (it might be free, but it's not better). He also makes it seem like the French have free health care and pay no taxes. They are showered with taxes.
I mean it's not surprising really. It's the same old Michael Moore. He's got a great point to make, but he's such a raging liberal that you can't take him seriously.
Pros: Moore kept himself out of most of the film, much more honest film-making tactics Cons: No interviews with the top level health care professionals
I think many people are shying away from this film because they either saw or heard about Michael Moore's film tactics of the past. This film focused on the victims rather than only pointing fingers, which made for a much more honest documentary.
The film left me feeling angry, not just because our health system sucks but because our political system does too, it's so corrupt and essentially unchangeable.
Pros: Powerful and informative Cons: sentimental - Cuba episode too contrived
This film opened in England yesterday - having recently seen Bowling for Columbine for the first time I was keen to see Moore's latest film. As a Brit I'm used to hearing the newspapers and politicians use our NHS as a political tool. This film made me thank God I have free and immediate access to healthcare and am not at the whim of some insurance company underwriter on whether I get treatment. An intelligent and sympathetic film that made me proud to be a European. I'm sure the film's attraction outside the U.S. will be the opportunity to see the real America without the Hollywood sheen. Within the States it should serve as a wake up call. The most powerful scene in the film was where Moore was interviewing Americans living in Paris - one of them quite rightly observed in France the government is afraid of the people - in the U.S. the people are afraid of the government. Try to impose an American style health system in Europe and there would be riots in the streets. Riot in the street in America and your likely to end up with a bullet in your head.
In any advanced, progressive society it seems that certain fundamental things should be taken care of. One of them is definitely basic health care and Michael Moore shows - through the lives of random people - that this is just not happening here in the U.S. When one compares that fact to the fact that health care and insurance companies are making billions of dollars of profit each year - it seems that maybe the system is a little screwed up. It will make you sad and it will make you mad . . . go see it today!
An eye opening movie to say the least by erkcuf,Jul 06 '07
Pros: Excellent presentation of the facts Cons: nothing
Michael Moore does a superb job of presenting the American Health care system and how screwed up it is as compared to other industrialized nations. This movie will make you angry and envious. If you're angry at our nation's Health care system, you must watch this movie. If you think nothing is wrong, guess again, you need to see this movie!
Sicko is a "must watch" for anyone concerned about health care. by dystantme,Jan 02 '08
Pros: Sicko is entertaining and educational. It will get you thinking and talking about health care. Cons: Moore's participatory style is not for everyone.
Sicko is an entertaining and maddening look at how dysfunctional our health care system has become. Michael Moore, once again, uses his own style to make a documentary that people will actually want to watch (not an easy feat in America). Because this is a documentary, I did not expect him to propose any ways to change the system, he's documenting the inadequacies. I have met people from all over the political spectrum who walked out of this film steaming mad.. not at Moore, but at the system that is letting us down. The US spends more money on health care, and yet has 47+ million uninsured citizens, and those with coverage are often underinsured, going without proper care, or going into bankruptcy to cover the cost of care. Moore participatory documentary style is not for everyone, if you sit down to watch Sicko expecting a straight documentary. When people in the most advanced country in the world have to hold bake sales and car washes to help pay for cancer treatments, then I'm grateful for films like Sicko to get people talking about it.
Pros: I can really not find any positive in this. Cons: It is a one sided highly opinionated unresearched portrayal of what ails US healthcare.
In Sicko Moore attempts to investigate the problems with our health care system and compares it with systems in other countries.
Moore does an injustice in trying to portray a government based system as the best solution to all problems. It is obvious from his liberal bias. One should ask the questions why are the medicare and the social security systems broke. It is unfortunate that with all the power and influence that Moore exerts over the audience, he is not able to properly analyze issues that will challenge his liberal bias.
If private insurance companies kept books the way Medicare and Social security accounts are maintained, it would be considered criminal. And Moore wants the same people who run these broke systems.
Pros: A great and entertaining work of fiction. Cons: Already well established.
If 'Sicko' can actually fall under the category of "documentary", then my belief that documentaries are valuable vehicles in discovering truth has been shaken to the core. I can no longer believe that Michael Moore cares at all about bringing truth to the American public, but feel that he's pursuing his own personal agendas. If you haven't yet seen this movie, don't waste your money. If you have, please don't be brainwashed by this one-sided and biased propaganda. True, the health care system in this country is in need of reform, but what educated or well-informed American didn't already know this? Composed of anecdotes and sensationalized stories, 'Sicko' makes no attempt to address the opinions of nurses, doctors or health care administrators, and I assure you, there are compelling arguments for the other side. See this movie if you must, but please do yourself a favor and at least educate yourself about the opposing arguments that Michael Moore never gave anyone an opportunity to express in this "documentary".
Pros: Should be school book type of information. His personality and film skills. Topic of documentary. Cons: If only it was longer on the subject. The US medical provider system itself.
Great movie on the truth! Its educational, informative and a real eye opener. I hope Michael does a film on the drug companies next...as it is all about money!
