by Ames100, Jun 22 '07
Pros: Digital tuner, HDD recording, DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW recording and high-speed dubbing, 1080p upconversion
Cons: Crippling copy-protection restrictions, lack of battery backup, no program guide or automatic naming
This Philips video recorder is one of the latest generation with a built-in digital tuner, an update mandated by the FCC for all new models sold in the USA after March 1, 2007. It features a 160 Gbyte hard disk drive, direct recording and high-speed ...

Best of the 2007 ATSC DVD Recorders

by comparator, Jun 29 '07
Pros: Hard drive provides chase play and 66 hours of programs in default record mode.
Cons: Doesn't record or pass through high def, can't manually add channels.
This unit, purchased a couple of weeks ago, is the sixth ATSC DVD recorder I've owned in 2007. The first five went back; this one, at least so far, is a keeper. I get television strictly via over-the-air, as opposed to cable or satellite. My ATSC ...

Impressive recorder for DVD and DVR use

by jvolzer, Feb 12 '08
Pros: Digital tuner, DVR with no subscription, pause live TV, simultaneous record & playback, dubbing
Cons: tedious titling, no timer titles, no DL
The Philips DVDR3575H is a DVD recorder and a 160 GB hard drive DVR in one unit offering 1080p upconvert capabilities and a digital/analog tuner. Background: I’ve stepped up to the DVDR3575H from an older Philips recorder, the DVDR75 ...

This Philips is Not A Screwdriver

by rallynow, Jan 09 '08
Pros: Excellent recording capacity; easy to see menus on screen
Cons: Small remote buttons; manual needs to be studied; no titling recording until it's completed
UPDATE: I have now owned it for 10 weeks and have NO defects to report. I still have no complaints except, as mentioned originally, it is not an intuitive machine and the manual has to be kept close if you want to be innovative, change quality of ...

Loved the product, the 30 days it worked

by marlos, Oct 13 '07
Pros: When it works, the product is awesome
Cons: After the first 30 days, it stopped working and the customer service is horrible
I did a lot of research (2-3 months) last spring before I found the dvdr I wanted. An HDD big enough and a DVD recorder to burn stuff. So I spent $300 and got the Phillips, a decent brand. The first month it worked beautifully. Everything was golden. ...

I LIKE IT ...WITH RESERVATIONS

by connie_s, Oct 08 '07
Pros: Recording quality good. HDD great. Editing not too time consuming once you're used to it
Cons: Can have bad spots on the harddrive. Alittle hard to learn..Keep the book handy at1st.
For a really comprehensive and detailed review on the product details and specs see the review by Ames100, it's very thorough. I wrote this to touch on a few points he might have missed, as well as to help the "new to DVD recorders" get started if they ...

Don't Buy

by christmas04, Nov 13 '07
Pros: Capacity
Cons: Not reliable, Bad Customer Support,No timer event name, No HD recording
Sept 12 2007. Philips seems to take 2 steps forward than 2 steps back. I have previously owned a Philips HDRW 720/17 and a Philips DVDR3455H/37. Philips seems to advance in development of some features (HDMI and HD tuner) but goes backwards on others. ...

GOOD PRODUCT, BAD COMPANY POLICY

by ginagina43, Jun 21 '08
Pros: A good product; functional and easy-to-use.
Cons: Buy a new one today, get a used ("refurbished") replacement tomorrow!
This is a good product. Functional and easy to use. I just happen to get a defective one. My complaint is not with the recorder but with Philips' return policy which in my opinion is dishonest. After set-up I noticed that timed recordings were ...

Great HDD recorder w/o TIVO subscription fees

by cwroten, Dec 05 '07
Pros: Reasonably priced. Works as described. Good manual.
Cons: Tiny button remote. Recorded title names don't include day-of-week.
Bought mine directly from Philips in Oct 2007 (after being unable to find anyone else actually having it in stock) and have been very pleased with it. No real problems thus far. I was looking to get a DVR without the programming guide and required ...

Fantastic price and functionality for my purposes

by tamiqua, Feb 11 '08
Pros: Price!- Subscription free HDD/DVD recorder for around $200
Cons: Remote
Having read the extensive reviews of other posters and generally agreeing with the pros and cons that have been written, I will add some notes for those that may have a projector set up. I chose the Phillips instead of another Tivo Series 3 (the ...

This is the one I had been waiting for!

by zzyzzx, Jul 02 '07
Pros: No need to use discs.
Cons: Buttons on remote are really small.
I have been wanting a TIVO that works off the air for a few years now. That and the fact that my VCR broke in the summer of 2006, and I wasn't going to get another one with an analog tuner with the digital TV being just around the corner. So I waited ...

Love This Unit (couple of problems)
by trgrant,Feb 26 '08
Pros: great recorder, does almost everything you could want
Cons: No unique naming of scheduled recording, some problems with dubbing.
I was finally tired of using tapes to record my favorite TV shows. I knew that there were hard drive recorders out there, so I thought that I would give this a try.

It works great. I knew that it had issues with the title of recorded items. I wish that you could give unique titles to your recordings. Instead you are stuck with the Date and Time stamp as your title (at least until you change it yourself).

The other problem that I had with this, was when I was copying from the Hard Drive to a DVD, there was one title that wouldn't end. I called Philips, and I basically was given the run around with incorrect answers. Finally, I figured out the problem, and I just recorded it manually, and ended the recording myself.

I have only had that problem with one title. All other recordings dubbed to the DVD perfectly.

However, don't add the chapters to the recording before dubbing it to the DVD. You will have to go back and add the chapters again after they are dubbed. The title name copies over fine, but the chaptering is lost.

Bought this unit about 2 months ago, and like it.
by georgelew,Dec 18 '07
Pros: Will play DIVX and JPEG files besides you music and video DVDs.
Cons: No TV guide so it doesn't name the program you're recording.
This is my second HDD recorder. My first one was a panasonic with a hard drive, but it finally went out. Looking around for another one and finding out that they don't make them anymore was a bummer.
This Philips unit works great, I have a big dish satellite that I just hooked up to the input plugs on the back. It's called 4DTV and the output is around 480. I think the Philips unit upconverts it, cause its looks great on my 32" LCD TV.
But the best thing I found out about the unit is that it can play DIVX DVD's. Those are mostly .avi files that you can download from the internet. I just drag the .avi files onto a dvd and the Philips reads them, displays a menu, and you just pick which ones you want to start watching. I can get 5-6 700 meg .avi movies on 1 dvd. No more converting them with NERO!
Of course no one else can play them, but it's a time saver for me!

Received two defective machines
by cohen725,Oct 06 '07
Pros: Has all the right functions.
Cons: I have yet to receive a machine that works properly.
Extremely disappointed. Purchased the machine three weeks ago and soon after the initial setup, all the Digital TV stations simply disappeared. I repeated the setup and after a few minutes again the Digital stations were gone. Called Philips, they recognized the problem, and said I was entitled to a Rapid Replacement. Two weeks latter I received a second machine with the identical problem. I am not a very happy customer.
