Pros: None, Don't get drawn in by price, you will pay for it in the end Cons: Epson completely disables every function of the printer when it 'says' its out of ink
I bought this printer because it was cheap and looked nice. Well, that was a really bad idea. Epson's ink scam won't let you print when the printer 'says' it is out of ink, and it said my color cartridges were less than half way full after two weeks of ...

Pros: Nothing Cons: Noisy, short ink life, sloping scan bed, fingerprints show on surface, scans painfully slow.
Where do I start with this dog? In the first place this is a very noisy printer. Not a good kind of noise, but the kind of cheesy noise that portends a short life, and the CX8400 didn't disappoint. Two weeks out of the box, two weeks of watching it ...

Pros: It's pretty on the outside. Cons: Then again, so is a termite-infested house with a fresh coat of paint.
Wow. Where to begin. This printer worked for a month before it stopped recognizing ink cartridges, and unfortunately I threw away the receipt so I couldn't count on Epson's warranty. Lucky me. It started to say that it "cannot recognize ink cartridges" ...

What goes around comes around
by lemmings88,Feb 29 '08
Pros: Now Im on the right track,, HP,,Cannon Cons: I cant afford the ink for this printer, Thanks Epson
Epson put so many bugs in their printers its even screwing their own cartridges up. Epson has gone out of its way to make sure you only use their cartridges. They have put a circuit in them that if cartridge goes below 10% full it burns out and can never be refilled. They have done nothing but create an ink hog. Go buy an Cannon or HP, lets show Epson we dont want their tricks. Why isnt there a class action suite against them for the problems they caused using remanufactured cartridges.

not for macs
by michaelts,Mar 22 '08
Pros: nice looking, good prints Cons: not compatible with mac OS users.
i bought this all-in-one because i wanted to do away with having three machines, printer, copier, scanner. i liked the size of this unit and since i got it on sale the price was right too. however, i have come to realize that it is not a unit that can be used fully with the mac OS. there is no option for double-sided printing. seems to scan and copy okay and the prints are good, but no double-sided printing. i have sent numerous emails to Epson Support about the lack of double-sided printing and finally i was told that double-sided printing was not available on the mac OS. it is available for windows users however. what an oversight on Epson's part. since i am a mac user i will never buy Epson again.

Won't buy Epson again
by navyseawitch,Mar 06 '08
Pros: Nice copies Cons: Expensive, short-life cartridges. Complete printer stop when 1 goes out.
Bought because I thought that if one of the color cartridges ran out, you could still print with one of the others...or at least the big double-cartridge black ink. Nope. One cartridge goes....printer stops. Lots of ink still in cartridge when it is supposedly "out". Can hear it sloshing around.
Does print beautiful copies (yes, scanner is slow), so only buy if you have a lot of cash for cartridges.

Epson CX8400 all-in-one printer
by rdog1687,Nov 25 '07
Pros: Nice printer with good functions for the price. Cons: Epsons' ink software makes mostly full cartidges appear empty.
I bought the Epson CX8400 to replace an HP that was still working but old. The all-in-one concept was needed, and the price was right, about $80. At the time I bought it, I didn't know about the class action suit against Epson. I will never buy another from Epson. After 60 days of intermittent use, the color cartridges are 1/2 to 3/4 empty with only TWO pages of color printed. Epson support says this is normal. Right.

Not a Very Good Buy
by damon6482,Jul 13 '08
Pros: Nice looking unit Cons: Eats ink, print heads clog, unable to clean print heads.
This printer seemed like a good buy for $99.00 at staples, but within 2 weeks the printer was out of ink. I thought maybe they were "sample" or "demo" cartridges, but replacement cartridges didn't last long either. Replacement cartridges have a chip installed to limit use, as does the factory cartridges, a bad thing. Difficult to change ink cartridges. The utility for cleaning the head works poorly, and after multiple cleanings it still prints poorly. After purchasing refillable cartridges, still going through huge amounts of ink. Poor print quality, overall a very poor value for your money. Not a hard printer to use, scanner is ok, but I have used much better. Software is acceptable. My biggest complaint would have to be the ink. Epson wants you to purchase only epson ink, very expensive I might add. One other issue with the ink is that the printer will say that the cartridge is empty, and the printer wont print, but when you pull the cartridge out, it is actually half full! What a scam. I plan on selling this nearly new unit ASAP! Don't purchase at any price, poor value for the money!

Wouldn't Buy it Again
by patscga,Sep 10 '08
Pros: Nothing special. Cons: The cost of ink cartridges is astronomical.
Doesn't do better than any other printers I've ever had. In fact it's slower than some for which I've paid less.

Great all around printer - good photos, fast, easy setup, great software, definitely recommend
by waytoobusy,Jan 05 '08
Pros: Fast, Easy, nice photos and prints, lightweight, great software Cons: Black finish on the top will show every speck of dust
Great printer for the money. Nice size and weight too, if you're thinking about dorm rooms or small apartments. We have had 2 HPs and one Lexmark over the past 5 years, and had just bought a Canon MX700 that we returned within 30 days due to poor print quality and issues with the fax. This Epson produces exceptionally nice photo prints with all kinds of special photo-related features, is fast, comes with software that doesn't crash or bog down your computer (pay attention, HP), is easy to install, and intuitive to use. Epson paper looks nice with this printer for photos, and we have used Canon paper as well.

A Great Printer!
by coddfishxx,Feb 10 '08
Pros: Great quality, and affordable ink Cons: Card stock must be fed 1 sheet at a time or it may jam
My previous printer was an EPSON PHOTO 900, it was a great printer for 5 years, then a water pipe broke and soaked the printer. Needing a printer right away I purchased a EPSON CX8400 from BEST BUY for $59. Simple to set up, worked great right out of the box. The software is easy to use and the print quality is excellent! I have read other reviews claiming noise, poor quality and slanted scanner beds. But not with my printer. I can only guess the my printer was shipped properly. The printer is still has the original ink shipped with it and has had heavy use. Price of ink in most stores in my area is less than other printers. I am happy I chose EPSON again.

Lousy Printer
by textileartist,Aug 13 '08
Pros: The only good thing about it is that the photos it prints are beautiful. Cons: See my comments above.
I bought this to replace a CX5400 which was a wonderful printer, except the yellow font clogged. I loved it because the scanner was terrific, the copier functioned just like an expensive copier with reduce and enlarge functions galore and lots of other options. The CX8400 is noisy, has very few functions, the scanning software is less than stellar, it drinks ink like it was water, the cartridges are horribly expensive, and I think I've had it with Epson's.

Good Printer for the Money
by dazeoff422,Oct 01 '07
Pros: Very easy set up. Less than 10 minutes, I was ready to go. Cons: Replacement ink seems a bit high for a small ink cartridge.
I've used an Epson CX3200 (3 in 1) printer for the past 3+ years until it wasn't printing an acceptable document. I bought a replacement Epson CX8400 (3 in 1) at Circuit City for $80.00. Extremely easy to set up. Comes with a multi fold quick start brochure and easy load CD driver software. Easy to read and follow. Set up took less than 10 minutes and ready to go. Has some very good features, especially the option to load 100 sheet of paper. I also like the memory card slot built into the front of the printer. Has four ink cartridges and you only need to change the color that needs to be replaced. All in all, I'm very pleased with this printer.
