Pros: Economical; reliable; good mpg; spacious for its class; very good handling; "sticks" to the road Cons: None, taking into account the cost. Otherwise, it's a lightweight so some noise. The Bottom Line: If on a budget, and want good mpg, handle unusual weather/road conditions, and safety is a large consideration, then this outdoes the 2004 competition.
My wife needed a new car in 2004 and wanted something economical, inexpensive and reliable with good mpg's because she drives about 18,000-20,000 miles a year. As of Jan 2008 she has about 59,000 miles on it and has not had a major repair expense. The ...

Pros: handling, speed Cons: not the most comfortable seating for long road trips
I love this car even more now than the day I bought it almost 3 years ago. It has made driving fun again. The handling is exceptional and the turbo boost comes in handy in sticky interstate driving situations. The oddly handsome looks of the 2.5 XT make it a standout (and easy to spot) in any parking lot. Throw in all the thoughtful extras in the interior (easy instrumentation, clever storage spaces, awesome stereo system) and you have one terrific driving package.

Pros: turbo--AWD Cons: Little tippy in the corners--stock tires are horrible.
I moved up to the XT from a WRX because of a growing family. I will always drive a Subaru due to the AWD and turbo models they offer, along with the reliabilty and overall value of Subarus. Let me start by saying I love this Subaru, it flat moves. It seems that there is less lag on the XT versus the WRX.
The handling is below average or maybe I was just spoiled with the WRX. But it seems a little wobbly at speed when carving turns and the stock tires from Yokahama are dreadful. The interior is very nice as is the exterior. It is well-made and an overall great buy.
I'm averaging around 23-25 miles per gallon, and that's with stomping on it occasionaly.. a lot of fun to drive!
