| W.O. Bentley was an engineer and racer who started out by finding ways to improve other carmakers engines. He founded his own car company in 1919, and delivered the first Bentley automobile in 1921. As was common for high-end carmakers of the time, Bentley sold a running chassis only, and it was up to the purchaser to have a coachbuilder supply bodywork. The company suffered continual financial problems, and was purchased by Rolls-Royce in 1931. As time went on, Bentleys eventually became Rolls-Royces with rounded grilles. That changed in 1982 with the introduction of the Bentley Mulsanne, the first recent model without a Rolls-Royce equivalent. Bentleys are best described as large, heavy, fast, and priced in the same league with aircraft, small yachts, and real estate. |
