Bang For The Buck

Check into 1408 for chills and thrills.

by garethvk, Jun 22 '07
Pros: Cusack and a great setup.
Cons: some drag in final act of film.
For writer Mike Enslin (John Cusack), ghosts and the supernatural are simply myths people use to bolster the local economy with tourism dollars. Mike has made a career of evaluating and debunking so called haunted inns, hotels, graveyards, and ...

'1408' is Worth Checking Into

by homerboy, Jun 22 '07
Pros: Lots of good scares, good performance from Cusack, and it has a brain
Cons: Not enough of Sam!
As I am writing this review I’ve just returned from seeing 1408 and I’m house sitting for some friends. It’s just me and Murphy (their dog) in this quiet house. After seeing 1408 I have to admit I am a little spooked at the moment. That alone ...

All the amenities at this hotel!!

by tharris70, Jun 26 '07
Pros: You want fear - you got it!!!!
Cons: Slow starting- could have had a better ending.
Mike Enslin is an author who writes on the paranormal and the occult. He has been in search of ghosts for a few years and has to turn up anything. When he receives a postcard advising him not to stay in room 1408 at the Dolphin Hotel in New York he ...

Hey, who turned on the radio and what's with the frig?

by snareisbroken, Jun 23 '07
Pros: Action in the first 15 minutes. Good acting, excellent special effects, realistic blood. Surprise ending.
Cons: The first hotel makes you wonder if this movie will be any good.
John Cusack plays Mike Eslin, a semi-known "ghost-hunter" and writer of haunted locations across the country. His daughter's recent death still weighing heavy on his mind, and an unresolved marriage compel him to view supernatural events with cynicism ...

1408...Stephen King

by drummell, Jul 03 '07
Pros: good story line, haunting, and super natural but not believable
Cons: poor all around, don't even know how to explain it
1408 is based on a short story but the horror novelist Stephen King. Mike Enslin, played by John Cusack, a paranormal, ghost, haunted places writer, is searching for a new adventure. He doesn't believe in what he researches, which is probably why ...

Creepy and Constantly Entertaining, A Solid Thriller

by movieman9000, Sep 17 '07
Pros: Great psychological and jump out scares. Great performance from Cusack.
Cons: It's a bit short, but none other than that.
This is a rare occurrence... a PG-13 thriller that actually manages to thrill, and do it well. Cusack does a great job, having to talk to himself, and to his tape recorder nearly the entire movie, pulling off a man losing his mind. He definitely is ...

Not your typical hotel stay (Thank God)

by carebear31, Dec 28 '07
Pros: scary, fantastic, atypical
Cons: none
I think this is the best Stephen King flick yet, very good character development and the special effects were really good. This is not a slash and gore film, it is far more developed and classy than that. It tells a very good story that has a ...

Not that great actually

by darkenchanter, Jul 29 '08
Pros: Good graphics and some scenes were worth the rental fee
Cons: The rest of the movie but mainly the ending
1408 is a Stephen King thriller… right? Wrong. This movie, while defiantly having a few “spooky” moments is defiantly not the best thing Hollywood has put out to date. Many things that come to mind when I think just how bad this movie was. The ...

Holy Horror Movie, Batman!

by jinx1764, Aug 09 '08
Pros: Not stop action, creative, strong performances, satisfying ending
Cons: could use a bit more explanation of why it's haunted
This movie was horror rollercoaster ride! It starts off with just enough back story to understand Cusak's character then immediately jumps directly into the main dish of horror. Cusak holds the majority of the movie himself which is quite a feat given ...

No Exit From This Hell
by jodystone,Jul 09 '07
Pros: Great filmmaking from start to finish, especially the total complete devastation of Room 1408.
Cons: If I ran the hotel I would have simply used 1408 as a janitor's closet.
I chose to see the psychological thriller "1408" like I choose so many of the movies I see mid-afternoon at the neighborhood multiplex -- the starting time fit my schedule. But I found myself drawn immediately into this adaptation of a Stephen King short story, and was kept on the edge of my seats til the very end. Unlike in most films of this genre, I could not guess what would happen next. For those of you who have had the privelege of seeing the film, consider the proposition that "1408" could be a philosophical companion to Sartre's existential classic "Huis Clos" where we learn (roughly translated) that "Hell is other people." Unlike Sartre, King and Company suggest that instead of "other people" we are smacked in the middle of the head with the real truth -- "Hell is US." Our fears, our inner most thoughts, our missed opportunities in life. And there is no escape.
